The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has published its first-ever State of the World’s Animal Health report, providing a comprehensive overview of global animal disease trends and risks. The report highlights a significant increase in avian influenza outbreaks in mammals, doubling from 459 in 2023 to 1,022 in 2024, raising concerns about potential mammal-to-mammal and human transmission. Additionally, the report notes that 47% of reported animal diseases are zoonotic, posing direct threats to human health.
In May 2025, six East African nations—Chad, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan—signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva to eliminate visceral leishmaniasis, commonly known as kala-azar. This agreement emphasizes cross-border collaboration, resource investment, and the development of effective policies to combat one of the world's deadliest neglected tropical diseases.
The third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) will convene in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13, 2025, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica. With the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean,” the conference aims to address critical challenges such as ocean warming, plastic pollution, and overfishing. Key objectives include securing $100 billion in commitments, advancing the ratification of the High Seas Treaty, and adopting the Nice Ocean Action Plan to enhance ocean conservation efforts. The event will bring together over 60 world leaders, 4,000 government officials, and 6,000 civil society participants to foster collaborative solutions for ocean sustainability.

This collaboration has led to initiatives like the Meri LiFE platform, promoting eco-friendly behaviors nationwide, and the Green Rising India Alliance, aiming to equip 50 million youth with climate resilience skills by 2030.
